So Many Reasons for Celebration on Giving Tuesday!

HEART celebrates the education we provide to students. It blends the encouragement of independent, creative, and community-building thinkers with the need for traditional learning required to pass national exams for diplomas.

There are so many reasons for celebration we want to share with you:

  • HEART’sdedicated teachers who care as well as teach
  • Cafeteria and kitchenthat provide two meals and a snack per day for sharper minds
  • Special attention courses and projects beyond required courses for graduation
  • Athletic programdemonstrates the importance of teamwork and exercise for a balanced life
  • Bio digester and garden broaden learningto importance of the environment
  • A library that allows students to independently build their understanding and knowledge, including film making!  Librarian James has recently produced a short, fictional film with staff and students at HEART.  This film is on the HEART in Haiti Youtube channel as: “The most valuable gift – Le plus beau des cadeaux” and the theme of the film is that education is the most valuable gift we can give the youth.” Please check it out!
  • Construction projectscompleted over the summer:  the multipurpose sports court, high school classrooms, and major work on the bathrooms to install urinals and toilets to serve our growing classroom sizes.

Regrettably, Haiti is amid a political and humanitarian crisis.  Schools, businesses and government agencies are either not functioning or not functioning in their usual capacity and students and staff are heartbroken because the school has not been open since September. Some have shared that they are embarrassed, discouraged, and sad for their country.

We have been paying the teachers and staff a portion of their salaries since they rely on income from the HEART School to provide for themselves and families. We want to support teachers as they have supported our students.  Luckily, on December 2nd, students and staff will come back to school for part time hours so they can see friends and catch up on some learning while the safety situation is still assessed.  Other businesses and agencies are also doing these soft openings on December 2nd and HEART’s staff, students, and families are looking forward to coming back.  We will be sure to provide updates to all HEART supporters in the weeks and months to come.  Thank you for continuing to partner with the HEART School in providing a better future for our students and community.

Please think of HEART on Giving Tuesday, which is December 3rd this year!
